This week, the Camden County Police Department is proud to recognize the officers who brought countless smiles to children’s faces this holiday season playing the roles of Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and Santa’s elf – Det. Joshua Soper, Sergeant Daniel Pope, Detective Tawand Smith and Officer Bethsaida Cordero.

On Sunday, Dec. 18, Sgt. Pope. Det. Smith and Ofc. Cordero did an outstanding job playing the parts of Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and Santa’s elf all day during the FOP’s annual Christmas gift giveaway event. FOP Lodge 218 – through officers, their families and local businesses – managed to collect nearly 1,000 new toys and gift cards this year. The FOP then identified more than 50 needy families in the city and on Sunday, ensured that they would have a special Christmas by presenting them with gifts for the whole family. Sgt. Pope as Santa, Det. Smith as Mrs. Claus and Ofc. Cordero as Santa’s elf presented the gifts to the children and their parents at Malandra Hall in the morning and at the Kroc Center in the afternoon. They did an excellent job as always ensuring the success of the toy drive by putting smiles on children’s faces all day long.

On Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2016, Det. Soper was called upon for a special assignment to play the role of Santa Claus at an event organized in the 2nd District for families in Centerville at the Chelton Terrace Community Center. Det. Soper did a great job with the part, arriving to cheers from the entire room and making sure to spend time with and talk to every single boy and girl there. All of the children were incredibly happy about the chance to meet Santa and have their picture taken with him.

For going above and beyond the call of duty to bring happiness to Camden’s children, we honor Det. Soper, Sgt. Pope, Det. Smith and Officer Cordero as Camden County Police Department Officers of the Week.

Police continue crackdown on gang heroin distributors

(Camden, NJ) – In a continuing collaborative effort with the state Attorney General’s Office that started with Operation Inferno, the Camden County Police Department, HIDTA Narco-Gang Unit and the New Jersey State Police made a significant narcotics arrest in the city. This morning a search warrant was executed that led to the arrest of two suspects and the seizure of two loaded weapons and a large quantity of heroin and cocaine.

Camden County Police Chief J. Scott Thomson focused attention on the narcotics trade and its direct and indirect impact on the community.

“Drug gangs do more than just ruin inner city neighborhoods as the poison they push reaches even the wealthiest communities.” Thomson said. “Too many people are dying from the violence associated with drugs and by the narcotics themselves as overdoses continue to rise. We will continue our coordinated effort from every level of law enforcement to protect neighborhoods and the people of Camden and the region.”

The following weapons and drugs were recovered during the search warrant execution at 1106 Baring Street:

-          A loaded Hi-Point 9mm handgun

-          A loaded 357 Taurus handgun

-          A total of 1,050 bags of heroin

-          Just over 400 grams of unpackaged cocaine

Two suspects were arrested during the execution of this warrant:

Jamaal Bailey, 36, of Camden, was charged with two counts of Possession of a Weapon During a CDS offense, two counts of Possession of a CDS With Intent to Distribute, Possession With Intent to Distribute Within 1,000 Feet of a School, Conspiracy, Maintaining a CDS Production Facility and Certain Persons Not to Have Weapons. The Certain Persons charge is based on a previous drug conviction.

Javon Bailey, 26, of Camden, was charged with two counts of Possession of a CDS, two counts of Possession With Intent to Distribute, Conspiracy and Possession of an Imitation CDS With Intent to Distribute.

Both suspects have been remanded to the Camden County Jail pending their detention hearings.

The Camden County Police Department and New Jersey State Police want to thank the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office and the Camden County Sheriff’s Department for their assistance in today’s arrest.

“We’re absolutely committed to these collaborative law enforcement efforts in Camden aimed at taking down the most prolific drug dealers, who are fueling gun violence in the city as well as the epidemic of heroin addiction that is ravaging communities throughout South Jersey,” said Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino. “These arrests will continue, as will our many other efforts to prevent opiate addiction and rescue those who have fallen into its deadly grasp.”

“Violence and narcotics distribution go hand-in-hand, which is why weapons are so often seized when we take down drug-dealers,” said Colonel Rick Fuentes, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police.  “I commend the great work by the State Police detectives and the investigators from our partnering agencies.”

The case is being prosecuted by the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice.

This operation is part of a continuing effort by all of the law enforcement partners working in the city to target and eliminate drug distribution networks. In November, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office working with federal, state, county and local partners including the Camden County Police Department took down a major drug distribution network operating in Camden and North Philadelphia and charged 15 individuals as part of Operation Inferno.

This week, the Camden County Police Department is proud to recognize three officers who made the community safer by utilizing de-escalation techniques and apprehending a dangerous suspect wanted for murder – Officers Ketevan Iosebidze, Jimmy Mercado and Damien Guanchez.

Officer Iosebidze joined the department in 2015 while Officers Mercado and Guanchez joined the department last year. All three officers serve in the Neighborhood Response Team in the city’s 2nd District.

On the afternoon of Jan. 14, 2017, Officer Iosebidze was on directed patrol addressing quality of life issues in the area of Ferry Avenue and 7th Street when she observed an individual she recognized as a fugitive wanted for murder walking in the area. Officer Iosebidze immediately called for assistance and provided a description of the suspect. As the suspect ascended a stairway to an apartment, Officer Mercado gave the suspect verbal commands to work to apprehend the suspect peacefully. After the suspect ignored several commands, Officer Mercado and Officer Guanchez continued to employ verbal de-escalation techniques and finally convinced the suspect to come down the stairs and surrender. He was placed under arrest without incident.

“The officers’ demonstration of alertness, teamwork and sound police tactics to defuse a potentially volatile situation led to the arrest of a dangerous individual who would have otherwise eluded capture,” said Lt. Zsakhiem James.

For their outstanding work, we recognize Officers Iosebidze, Mercado and Guanchez as the Camden County Police Department Officers of the Week. Also nominated were Officers Shane Heisler and Brian Ford and Officers Christian Blaker and Christopher Arthur.
